'People We Meet on Vacation' film is Emily Henry-approved: 'Readers are in good hands'

WATCH: What to expect in entertainment in 2026

Grab your passport -- "People We Meet on Vacation" is almost ready for takeoff.

Ahead of its Jan. 9 streaming release date, the cast and crew hit the carpet at the Los Angeles premiere Tuesday to talk about the highly anticipated film and why you'll be wanting to book your next trip after you see it.

"I feel very hungry for a holiday after I've seen the movie and I hope everyone else will be too," Jameela Jamil told "Good Morning America" at the premiere.

The Brett Haley-directed film is based on Emily Henry's bestselling novel of the same title. It follows Poppy (Emily Bader) and Alex (Tom Blyth), who have embarked on a travel adventure together every summer for nearly a decade, until a trip abroad causes them to stop speaking for two years.

After years of not speaking, Poppy convinces Alex to take one more trip with her where she hopes to make things right between them.

Since its release in 2021, Henry's book has garnered a loyal fanbase and was named the winner of the Goodreads Choice Award for Romance that same year.

Given the fandom, Haley said he wanted to make sure that he got Poppy and Alex's story right.

"Poppy and Alex's journey is the most important thing," he said. "And staying true to the basic plot and journey and not changing inherently what makes Poppy, Poppy, and what makes Alex, Alex. That was number one."

He added, "I think we did a really good job of keeping the spirit of the book and really the story and the characters are very, very, very true I would say, 100%."

Henry, who is an executive producer on the film, also praised the writers and filmmakers for "getting it right for the readers."

"The readers are in good hands," she said.

Henry went onto say that she is excited for fans of her novel to see Poppy and Alex's chemistry unfold on screen and added that Bader and Blyth were the perfect people to portray them in the film.

"Just seeing their chemistry read, the way that he plays this stoic, repressed by quietly hilarious character, and then the moments where he lets his humor out a little bit more, she's just delighted by it, surprised by it – you can just tell that they're doing this bit for each other and they're both having so much fun, just like I imagined the characters would be," Henry said.

For Bader, she said she wanted to make sure she protected Poppy's "muchness."

In the synopsis for the novel, Poppy is described as a "wild child" and has an "insatiable wanderlust."

"Women are capable of all sorts of things and I didn't want to minimize her not one percent," Bader said. "I think she fills the room and is a bolt of sunshine and lightning and I wanted to keep that safe."

When it comes to the romance in the film, Blyth said that what he loves most and what audiences will love too is that it's a "slow burn" between Poppy and Alex.

"I love that it takes them a long time to get to know each other and to really appreciate each other because I think that's kind of like life," he said. "Even if you get with someone and it works out right away, I think staying in love is a long process."

In addition to Bader as Poppy, Blyth as Alex and Jamil as Swapna, the film also stars Sarah Catherine Hook, Lucien Laviscount, Miles Heizer, Lukas Gage, Tommy Do, Molly Shannon, Alice Lee, Alan Ruck, Madeleine Akua and Ian Porter.

"People We Meet on Vacation" will be available to stream on Netflix on Jan. 9.
